While the Jewish leaders are certainly his accusers, Caesar’s men are eager and revel in the process and fulfillment of Christ’s scourging and execution. In fact, the Romans should temper the many accusations of anti-Semitism that have been targeted toward this film. From there, we move through to the judgments of Caiphas (Mattia Sbragia), Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), Herod, and back to Pilate who dismisses the matter into the hands of the Jewish leaders and, as portrayed in this film, the bloodthirsty Roman soldiers. Gibson has chosen to open the film with the Savior’s atonement in the Garden of Gethsemane. It’s only unfortunate the script, which is spoken in Amharic and Latin with English subtitles, doesn’t allow more time for the audience to appreciate his portrayal of Christ in less intense circumstances. In every moment on screen, this little-known actor lives up to this measure. James Caviezel is the man whom the director determined to have the ?penetrating eyes and transparent expressions to convey the essence of love and compassion in utter silence?-traits Gibson felt were essential in his representation of Deity. Or at least, who Jesus is from Gibson’s perspective. Yet, from his back pocket, he has placed $25 million on the table to tell the world who Jesus is. Obviously, for Mel Gibson, Jesus is revered, although I must admit that previous to the tremendous buzz generated by this movie, I had no idea Gibson’s religious values were this focused. For many, Jesus Christ is nothing more than a blurted expletive. After all, is there any other figure in history that so many people claim to have a personal relationship with? Or, is there any one person who is held in more contempt? His named is called out as the one who is responsible for everything from wars to the injury of one’s thumb by a hammer. A unique & unforgettable experience. If there was a vote for the most difficult historical figure to recreate in drama, Jesus Christ must be at the top of the list. For me, The Passion of the Christ is one of the best films of its year and certainly one of Mel Gibson’s finest. It’s worth stressing again that this is going to be a very upsetting & distressing cinematic experience for every viewer, religious or not, and isn’t recommended to those who are easily triggered. On an overall scale, The Passion of the Christ is destined to polarise its audience but its visceral power & emotional impact cannot be denied. Caviezel is thoroughly compelling in what’s a physically demanding & emotionally draining input while Morgenstern is even better as the Virgin Mary, expressing the inner agony of a mother in a very precise & perceptible manner. And John Debney contributes with a fitting score that often manages to evoke the desired emotive response.Ĭoming to the performances, The Passion of the Christ features a fine cast in Jim Caviezel, Maia Morgenstern, Monica Bellucci, Hristo Zhivkov & others. Editing unfolds its 127 minutes runtime at a steady pace and though the story feels slow at first, it catches up real soon. And apart from its dialed-up cruelty & other little elements, it’s quite faithful to its source of inspiration.Įmploying the camera in a controlled fashion, Cinematography makes effective use of slow-mo, close-ups & wisely chosen angles in order to deliver maximum impact. Production design team puts up appropriate set pieces, bringing Jerusalem to life in splendid detail. The storytelling is mostly through the visuals, and the decision to use era-specific languages instead of English is simply an attempt to give the film an added sense of authenticity. Leaving no stone unturned, Gibson delivers a biblical drama that isn’t just brutal, merciless & unforgiving but also profoundly affecting.

The story begins with his arrest after being betrayed by one of his disciples, following which he is brought to trial where he is accused of blasphemy, and is eventually sentenced to death that’s carried out by crucifixion.ĭirected by Mel Gibson, his creative eye for storytelling is no doubt impressive but the excessive barbarism on display here makes the film an endlessly disturbing sit that’s nearly impossible to forget. The Passion of the Christ depicts the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Counted amongst the most controversial works since its release, it is also one of the most graphically violent films ever made. A powerfully moving, emotionally scarring & extremely harrowing portrait of the final hours of Jesus Christ’s life, The Passion of the Christ is definitely not for the easily distressed.
